Run through the red walls of the city for this prestigious event, and see and taste the delights of Marrakech

It's hard to imagine a more inspirational setting to run a marathon (or half-marathon) than the red city of Marrakech in Morocco. Considered one of the world's most prestigious marathons and one of the fastest courses in the world, this is an occasion not to be missed. You can be there to race and explore the sights and sounds of the city on this exciting holiday.

Travel Morocco with Intrepid

We've teamed up with Intrepid Travel to bring you an exclusive eight-day itinerary exploring the ancient sites of Morocco and taking part in the 31st edition of the exhilarating (half or full) International Marathon of Marrakech.

Foodie city

In addition to the main event, you will feed the soul and the stomach on a foodie tour of the souks of Marrakech, visit an Argan oil co-operative and vineyard and spend an afternoon in Essaouira, a walled city on the edge of the Atlantic Ocean, all in the company of other readers. After the race, you will enjoy a traditional hammam treatment, followed by a well-earned massage to help you recover from your exertions.

The Marrakech Marathon

The real highlight, however, is racing on the Marrakech marathon's flat course, along alleys of palm trees, through lush orange and olive groves and the stunning red-tinged ramparts of the city that began construction in 1126. You're certain to have an experience you will remember for a lifetime and form friendships that will last just as long.

Welcome to Morocco. Upon arrival at the airport you'll be transferred to your hotel to settle in.

In the late afternoon, a local guide will join you for a foodie tour of Marrakech, where you'll discover some of the hidden food shops and cafes beloved by the city's residents. You'll visit the souks to taste olives, dried fruits, seeds, pastries, and other Moroccan specialties, then head to a local spice market and hear how spices are utilised in Moroccan dishes. Finally, you'll enjoy dinner in one of the many great restaurants lining the main square.

The old medina and Bahia Palace
    Marrakech, Morocco

After breakfast at the hotel, meet your local guide and set off on a morning tour of the old medina, through the bustling souks that are the lifeblood of Marrakech. Your tour will be leisurely, with plenty of free time to wander where your heart desires.

Explore tranquil courtyards lifted by the scent of orange blossom, and the many salons and chambers that make up Bahia Palace. This splendid mansion was built in 1866 for a former slave who rose to power within the government. Stop by the Koutoubia Mosque; its famous minaret is the prototype for others of its kind around the world, including La Giralda in Seville. You'll also visit the tropical gardens of the French painter Jacques Majorelle.

    International Marathon of Marrakech
    Marrakech, Morocco

Today participate in the International Marathon of Marrakech for a full or half day. This race is run in Marrakech, a magical town that offers a fantastic setting, an exceptionally mild climate in January and a beautiful circuit, considered to be the fastest in the world. The route takes you through the city's 12th-century ramparts and Menara gardens on dusty roads lines with palms. The Atlas Mountains provide an astonishing backdrop to the pink-walled city.

    Ouirgane
    Ouirgane , Morocco

After breakfast, travel into Morocco's beautiful countryside and pay a visit to the magnificent green valley of Ouirgane, hidden in the foothills of Mount Toubkal. This is a great place for trekking.

Later in the afternoon, you'll enjoy a unique experience. Entering a traditional hammam (like a Turkish bath or a steam room), you'll have the chance to enjoy a relaxing and purifying body ritual, with Moroccan black soap exfoliation and Argan oil body milk moisturizing treatment followed by a well-earned massage. This evening can be spent relaxing at leisure.

    Argan oil cooperative
    Essaouira, Morocco

Travel towards the Atlantic Coast today towards the old fishing town of Essaouira. En route you'll stop off at an Argan oil cooperative and a family-owned vineyard. Argan oil is highly-prized for its culinary and cosmetic uses and is only produced in Morocco. Discover the strenuous process behind its production (one litre can take 20 hours to produce) and taste this renowned elixir on a piece of bread to enjoy its distinctly nutty flavour.

You'll arrive in Essaouira by late afternoon, a city where the medina brushes against the Atlantic Ocean. Sandstone walkways contrast with whitewashed houses, bright blue sky and the sand of the surrounding beaches and dunes. Spend the evening enjoying this serene town at your own pace.

    Essaouira
    Essaouira, Morocco

Join a local guide today for a walking tour of Essaouira's old medina (walled town), Jewish mellah (the walled Jewish quarter), the port and the skala (sea wall). Make the most of some free time afterwards to get under the skin of this town, exploring its narrow pedestrian streets, which appear not to have changed for centuries, since the days of sea pirates.

The fishing port is a serious commercial operation and there's much fun to be had observing the daily catch and its subsequent auction. We highly recommend digging in to a freshly cooking catch of the day. You can also browse the shops and art galleries of this little town with a growing reputation for its unique art and its burled Thuya wood. If you find the alleys are fragrant, this will be because of the oils used to polish the wood, which locals fashion into trinket boxes and other decorative objects, often inlaid with other types of wood or mother-of-pearl.
