Look & Feel8/10

You sweep down a driveway studded with specimen trees to a wisteria-clad red-brick manor house with Tudor gables and mullioned windows. Inside, you'll find elegantly-proportioned rooms dominated by carved wooden fireplaces, delicate plasterwork and extravagant flower arrangements.

Most guests spend their days in bathrobes and slippers, so the vibe is rather like a Swiss sanatorium and is wonderfully relaxed. The spa and most of the bedrooms are in a more modern extension that is a little disappointing after the grandness of the main house.

The outdoor tennis courts and swimming pool are sociable spots during the warmer months and there is also an indoor pool and tennis courts if the weather doesn't play nicely. Grayshott has a nine-hole golf course and woodlands for guided power walks. Most guests find a treatment, a stint or two in the sauna and steam rooms, followed by a workout takes up much of the day.

There are 59 bedrooms, split between the faded gentility of the original mansion, and more modern ones in the extension. The decor throughout in cautiously casual: with oatmeal walls and chairs, cosy postbox-red or sky-blue accents for the soft furnishings and soothing abstract art, absolutely nothing that would cause sleepless nights for those of a delicate disposition.

It's hardly high-tech but, unlike many spas, Grayshott's rooms do at least have flat-screen TVs and Wi-Fi so you're not forced to detox digitally.

Food & Drink8/10

Dine in the conservatory or the wood-panelled restaurant. It's healthy buffets for breakfast and lunch, with guests mainly in bathrobes or sports gear. Dinner is informal, although everyone will be wearing "proper" clothes, and your a la carte meal could include confit of duck with braised red cabbage and truffle mash, followed by a satisfyingly sweet dessert such as ice cream or panna cotta with spiced apple and pears.

There's also Bubbles Bar, which serves coffee, juices and wines and has a generous spread of complimentary snacks for pre-prandial drinks.

Packages with full-board accommodation and spa treatments are great value considering the quality of the treatments, facilities and location.

There are also some seriously good targeted packages such as Managing Diabetes, which offers supportive advice from qualified practitioners, plus a range of sensitive cancer-adapted treatments. The Health Regime is designed to flush out bad bacteria and encourage good bacteria. It's strict, but fans report increased energy levels, better sleep and long-term weight loss.
